It would be impossible to provide the quality programs we offer at Christ the King Lutheran Church without the dedication of our volunteers. Below is a partial list of ways you can help our congregation give glory to God through service. If you would like more information on any area of service please contact the church office.
Acolyte
As an acolyte, you will carry on a tradition in the Christian church that goes back to the year 250AD. Since that time Acolytes have been helping Pastors with a number of important functions in the worship service. The word “Acolyte” means “companion” or “one who helps". An acolyte will enter at the beginning of the worship service to light the candle's on the altar. At the end of the service they will extinguish the candles and carry the flame out of the church. During the church year we have special sundays where the cross will be carried in. The acolyte will also help the pastor when ever a baptism is performed.
Altar Care Duties
Prepares the church for service each Sunday. Ensures that the correct paraments are placed on the altar and the pulpit, and that the altar is ready for each service. Prepares for Communion or the Lord’s Supper each week.
This task for the Lord does not require a great deal of time and proper training and guidance is given to all members desiring to serve in this area.
Altar Guild Members
1. Keep altar cloths clean.
2. Put out proper color paraments for the week.
3. Fill glasses for common cup and intinction.
4. Fill plate with communion wafers and large wafer for the pastor.
5. Set the table on the altar.
6. Clean up after the service.
Duties of the Crucifer
During special services, a Crucifer (carrier of the Cross) will be used in addition to an acolyte.
A. Appropriate dress is the same as for an Acolyte
B. In addition to a robe, the Crucifer will wear white gloves during the processional and recessional.
C. Hold the Cross in front of you and lead the processional. Walk as an acolyte. When you step into the chancel move to the rail and face the congregation.
D. After everyone have reached their seat (Pastor & Choir), place the cross in the stand behind the altar and take your seat. E. When there is a Gospel Processional the Crucifer will pick up the Bible at the appropriate time and follow the pastor (acolytes will be last) to the center aisle. After pastor is done reading the gospel, turn and lead the “group” back to the Altar, return the bible and return to your seat.
F. When the Acolyte gets up to put out the candles, pick up the Cross and move to the front of the rail wait for the acolytes to put out the candles. When they reach you, you will lead the way out of the sanctuary with everyone following you.
G. After the Service, if the cross will not be used in the next service, return it to the holder on the altar and hang up your robe
Lay Reader
Lay readers assist each Sunday by reading an assigned lesson at a designated service. The lesson is mailed to you the week before. This allows you time to look over the lesson and prepare for the service. Lay readers also assist the pastor in distributing Communion.
